5-HTP is short for 5-hydroxytryptophan. Technically speaking, it is an intermediate metabolite which helps in the conversion of the essential amino acid tryptophan into serotonin.
Serotonin is one of the most important chemicals in the brain. It is vital for the proper functioning of the brain and nerves. L-tryptophan, an amino acid naturally found in food sources, are converted to 5-HTP which is then used for the synthesis of serotonin.
5 HTP vitamin supplements are available widely today. As a dietary supplement, it has the ability to raise the serotonin levels found in the brain. This gives way to positive effects on various processes and functions which includes mood, sleep, anxiety, appetite, and pain sensation, among many others, as these are the factors directly controlled by serotonin.
5-HTP and Appetite. One of the most revered benefits of 5-HTP is its effect on appetite. It is believed that low serotonin induce appetite such that normalizing its levels will work the opposite way. Thus, 5-HTP is used as an effective supplement for weight loss as well.
5-HTP and Anxiety. Low serotonin level has also been linked to anxiety and undue stress. Intake of 5-HTP increases serotonin levels, making you feel normal again.
5 HTP for Depression. 5HTP seems like a promising solution to those who have depression. They are seen to be as effective as anti-depressants, but without the unwanted side effects. Furthermore, it might be worth noting that there is a perennial plant called St. John's Wort whose increased serotonin action is much like that of 5-HTP. Taking St. John's Wort and 5-HTP altogether to fight off depression can be worth a shot.
5 HTP and Ecstasy. 5-HTP has been used in the recent years with MDMA, also known as Ecstasy. While MDMA users think that 5-HTP improves the effect of Ecstasy, it actually does not work that way. 5-HTP is actually effective in warding off depression that set in days after use.
5-HTP definitely does work. By taking 5-HTP, you are providing your brain with the necessary precursor to build more serotonin. This way, you are able to control cravings, moods, depression for better results.
Though some minor side effects have been reported to be associated with 5-HTP supplements, it is still very safe to take at the recommended dosage.

Its benefits along with its side effects are all due to the fact that 5-HTP has significant effects on the nervous system. Side effects are perfectly normal and usually mild.
5-HTP is marketed commercially and comes in various brands. We recommend Life Extension's 5-HTP (L-5-hydroxytryptophan). This is a stand-alone 5-HTP supplement through which you can enjoy the various benefits provided by this compound.
