Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a plant that grows in North America. It is a tree that grows only a maximum of 4 feet in height, with fan-shaped leaves and bears abundant berries. The saw palmetto berry has been used by native North Americans as cure for urinary problems in men and breast disorders in women. Further studies have shown that concentrated oils from saw palmetto berries are effective in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Today, saw palmetto treatment for BPH is widely accepted in many countries. BPH is a condition characterized by urination problems which may include frequent urination, weak urinary stream, difficulty in urination and incontinence. It is also believed to have positive effects in treating prostate cancer, breast problems, acne, bronchitis and asthma, bladder inflammation, hair loss, and high blood pressure, among others.
Saw palmetto is theorized to work by preventing the breakdown of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is responsible for stimulating prostate gland cells to grow and multiply excessively. Saw palmetto reportedly has the same effect as Proscar (finasteride) in treating prostatitis, but saw palmetto treatment has fewer side effects.
Saw palmetto has also been used extensively for breast enlargement in women. It is said to stimulate the production of the female hormone prolactin, which promotes breast enlargement and milk production in women who are breastfeeding.
Saw palmetto has also been seen to be useful in treating colds, asthma and bronchitis. It is a diuretic and a tonic and it has the power to affect the mucous membranes of the respiratory system. It is also said to be effective in lowering blood pressure by blocking alpha-1 adregenic receptors that lead to dilation of blood vessels. In addition, saw palmetto has also been suggested to block testosterone effects that can lead to male pattern hair loss. It is also used for treating acne vulgaris by virtue of hormone regulation.
Saw palmetto treatment pills are now available in the market. Two popular saw palmetto-based dietary supplements are Xtend-Life's Male Rejuvenator and Total Balance.
Male Rejuvenator contains saw palmetto and beta sitoserol as well as other natural nutrients such as Quertecin, Grape Seed and Green Tea which all help in protecting the prostate against cancer, alleviating enlarged prostate, and management of the discomfort associated with this condition. At the same time, this supplements help in dealing with impotence by bringing back loss of libido and sexual desire in men.
Xtend-Life's Total Balance also contains saw palmetto extract and beta sitoserol, essential minerals, enzymes, vitamins, amino acids and complementary co-factors that work together in restoring normal organ and brain function. It is also suggested to help build a strong immune system, balancing hormones and in avoiding undesirable effects of premature aging. Total Balance is available in three types: as a formulation for men (Men's Plus), for women (Women's Plus), and for both (Unisex).
